Which Doormat Size Is Right For Your Home?
Choosing the right doormat size may seem simple, but it can be surprisingly tricky. While standard door sizes exist, variations in both door and doormat production can make finding the perfect fit challenging. To make the process easier, we’ve created a handy cheat sheet to help you select the ideal doormat size based on common door dimensions.
Just remember, while we try to make all WaterHog mats to the size stated, there is a (+/-) 3% variance due to the manufacturing process.
1. Medium-Size Doormats: A standard American single-entry door is typically 36 inches wide, and our medium-size doormats are designed for this width.
2. Half-Round Doormats: For those considering a half-round doormat, the straight edge is also aimed to align with a standard single door, offering both coverage and a visually balanced entryway.
3. Large-Size Doormats: For slight extended coverage, our large-size doormats typically spill over the width of a single door, accommodating coverage or sidelights.
Still have a few questions? Let us help.
What's the best way to make sure it fits my door?
Measure twice, order once! The best way to ensure you'll be happy with the size of the mat you order is to measure.
On every buying page, we list in inches the size of every mat offered. So if you're concerned it may be a tight fit, take a tape measure and tape and mark the spots where the corners will potentially lie. Keep in mind there is up to a (+/-) 3% variance.
After measuring out the potential layout and you still have concerns on size, it's in your best interest not to order that particular size WaterHog.
I've never ordered a doormat online. What size doormat should I get?
Have no fear, that's why we're here!
First, consider the area and measure your space. To give you a visual idea, it's a good idea to mark the perimeter with tape or something to outline the potential mate.
Second, make sure the mat you are considering would be able to lay flat, unobstructed, and not hang over any edges.
Third, confirm door clearance. How bummed would you be to have the perfect size WaterHog, only for your door to get stuck because of low-clearance.
Last, consider the amount of foot traffic. If you're WaterHog is going to be used in an area of your home subjected to lots of boots, paws, cleats, etc. coming from traditionally dirty areas (think dirt, sand, grass, snow), you may want to consider going with a larger size to increase the coverage area.
What size doormat for double doors do you recommend?
As mentioned above, most standard sets of double doors are 72" wide and will benefit from an extra-large sized WaterHog.That being said, not all double doors are created equal.
Smaller double doors may benefit from a large-sized WaterHog. Larger custom size double doors may actually need a larger runner-sized WaterHog.
Just remember to measure your space, and compare to the specs listed within the dropdown on each buying page.
I'm not seeing a doormat size that works. Would a runner work?
Good question, but the answer is it depends.
In the case of larger entrances like sliding glass doors or accordion doors, a runner size will work really well.
Again, it all goes back to the measure twice, buy once frame of mind. When you take time to measure and mark your space, you'll have the peace of mind knowing the size purchased will work for your space.
