I've heard rubber is bad for vinyl flooring; is this true?
WaterHog mats are safe for the vast majority of flooring types found in homes, including hardwood, ceramic and porcelain tile, stone, concrete, and most vinyl.
If you have vinyl flooring, we recommend you refer to your flooring manufacturer's care guide. Certain vinyl flooring contains plasticizers that may leach out over time and react with rubber and other compounds; which may result in discoloration.
So, if you have any concerns; it's better to play it safe than sorry, and do a little research before making your purchase. As always, the WaterHog Customer Care Team will be here to help as well.

Size & Profile FAQs
I'm not real sure what size mat I need to order. Can you help?
Of course we can! The best thing you can do before placing your order is "measure twice, order once"!
We've also put together this size guide to help reference mat size in relation to door types - The WaterHog Size Guide
Look, we all know it's expensive to ship items these days, so be sure to measure before to prevent unnecessary costs and pollution for you and for us.
What size doormat should I buy for a single door?
A doormat should be large enough for both feet to make contact before stepping inside. For a standard 36-inch door, a medium or large WaterHog gives plenty of space to scrape and absorb. Smaller mats may look tidy, but they can’t do their job effectively. With WaterHog’s wide range of sizes, it’s easy to match both function and fit.
What size mat do I need for double doors?
Double doors deserve double the coverage. Look for a mat that spans at least 60 to 72 inches across, or opt for a 3'×8' runner to cover both openings in one sweep. WaterHog offers larger formats made for grand entryways, ensuring consistent floor protection and balanced proportions. It’s the right look and the right level of defense for bigger spaces.
What’s the best low-profile mat that won’t catch on the door?
A low-profile mat should clear your door swing without sacrificing thickness where it matters. WaterHog mats feature a beveled, ADA-compliant edge and a low overall height that sits flush against the floor. That means no door drag, no curled edges, and no tripping hazards. It’s sleek, stable, and engineered to stay that way.
Can WaterHog be trimmed to fit?
Yes — if you need a precise fit, you can trim your WaterHog with a sharp utility knife and a straightedge. The rubber backing cuts cleanly, allowing for a customized edge that won’t fray. Just measure carefully before you start; trimming is permanent and voids return eligibility and may affect performance.
Do WaterHog sizes run exact?
Like all high-quality mats, there’s a small tolerance in the manufacturing process. WaterHog sizes can vary slightly (about ±3%) from the listed dimensions. It’s a normal result of the way the rubber backing cures during production.
Color FAQs
I notice there's quite a bit of color variation in your imagery, is this normal?
We get this question a lot, and the short answer is yes, but let's explain a little more.
Here's a color variation guide to shed a little more light on the subject - The WaterHog Color Guide.
The biggest culprit when it comes to color variation is lighting. A little exercise we like to do to show the variation is to take a picture of a WaterHog under a typical indoor light setting (lamp, can lights, etc.), and then take it outside under natural sunlight or shade and notate the difference.
A WaterHog's surface is made up of many highly reflective fibers consisting of different colors; so at times it can appear to look really different.
This is also another reason why we showcase real photography with little to no color edits so you can actually see the variance in real life.
I have an older WaterHog, but I want to buy a new one to match, will they?
This is a common question, and the answer is - it depends.
If you're looking for an exact match, the answer is maybe not. The way we make a WaterHog is still very much a manual process, right down to the way we mix and assemble our fibers. It's not an exact science and never will be.
We do have a set of color standards that include a level of tolerance that we abide by to ensure that all surface colors for WaterHog fall within a certain range.
While we are highly consistent, there is always a chance for a slight variance in color, especially between mats that are purchased years apart.
So if you're more of a "go with the flow", you're all good. If you're a "it better match or I'm gone", you may want to reconsider.
Remember, our team is always here to help. So, if you have any questions on color, don't hesitate to reach out via the chat feature or by email.
"Best of" FAQs
What’s the best doormat on the market right now?
The best doormat is one that actually keeps the mess outside where it belongs. WaterHog stands out because its unique bi-level PET surface scrapes off dirt while the raised water-dam border traps moisture below shoe level. It doesn’t just look good on your porch — it works hard to protect the floors inside your home. Unlike decorative mats that fail fast, WaterHog performs season after season, no matter the weather.
What’s the most durable outdoor doormat?
A truly durable doormat uses industrial-grade materials that won’t quit. WaterHog’s surface is made from crush-resistant PET fibers, permanently bonded to a heavy-duty rubber backing that won’t crack or curl in the elements. It was engineered for commercial buildings and later adapted for home use, meaning it’s built to take a beating. From snow boots to muddy paws, it’s a mat that simply refuses to wear out.
Which doormat keeps dirt out the best?
The most effective mats are designed to scrape, not just decorate. WaterHog’s ridged texture scrubs dirt and debris from shoes while deep channels trap it beneath the walking surface. That means your guests aren’t carrying the outdoors into your home every time they walk in. It’s a functional barrier between your floors and everything nature throws at your doorstep.
What’s the best all-weather doormat?
A true all-weather doormat should perform just as well in heavy rain as it does under direct sunlight. WaterHog’s PET fibers are hydrophobic, meaning they resist absorbing water, and they’re UV-stable to prevent fading. The rubber backing stays flexible in heat or freezing temperatures, so it never cracks or curls. No matter the climate, WaterHog keeps its grip and its good looks.
What doormats do professionals recommend?
Facility managers, property designers, and safety experts consistently recommend WaterHog for one reason — performance. Its commercial-grade build traps dirt and water better than anything else on the market, while its low-profile edge prevents tripping hazards at entryways. It’s designed to meet professional safety and durability standards, yet refined enough for home use. That’s why you’ll find it everywhere from schools and hospitals to front porches across America.
What’s the best doormat for the money?
The best value doormat is one you won’t have to replace every season. WaterHog’s long lifespan and proven performance make it the smarter investment — less frequent replacements and consistently cleaner floors. Cheap coir or vinyl mats may cost less initially but quickly fall apart, fade, or shed. A WaterHog pays for itself over time by doing the job right, year after year.
Are WaterHog mats worth it?
Without question. WaterHog is engineered to outperform and outlast typical mats, giving you real protection for your entryway. Its unique construction traps dirt and moisture while maintaining a refined, polished appearance that complements any home style. When you factor in the performance, lifespan, and American craftsmanship, WaterHog is worth every penny.
And yes, we may be a little biased...
Location-Specific FAQs
What’s the best doormat for a front door?
The best front-door mat is one that looks welcoming but works like a barrier. WaterHog’s raised surface scrapes away dirt, mud, and leaves while its recessed water-dam border traps moisture below shoe level. It keeps the mess outside even when the weather isn’t cooperating. With a refined appearance and rugged build, it’s designed to be the first line of defense for your home’s entryway.
What’s the best doormat for a covered porch?
A covered porch calls for a mat that still handles dirt, grit, and sudden downpours. WaterHog’s bi-level PET surface traps debris deep in its channels, while the quick-drying fibers prevent mildew from forming. Its rubber backing grips the porch surface and stays flat, even on humid or uneven floors. You get the ideal balance of performance and curb appeal.
What’s the best mat for an uncovered entry that gets full sun and rain?
For exposed areas, you need a mat that resists fading, rotting, and water saturation. WaterHog’s PET fibers are UV-stable and hydrophobic, so they dry fast and never fade under direct sunlight. The all-rubber base won’t crack or curl in extreme temperatures. It’s made to survive the elements — not surrender to them.
What’s the best doormat for apartments or condos?
Tight hallways and shared entries demand a low-profile, non-slip mat that won’t budge. WaterHog’s ADA-compliant beveled edges prevent tripping while its thin design slides under most doors without snagging. The rubber base anchors the mat in place on smooth floors, and the sleek surface looks polished enough for any hallway. It’s quiet, clean, and built for communal living.
What’s the best mat for a garage or side entry?
A garage or side entry faces heavy, messy traffic—mud, oil drips, and all. WaterHog’s industrial roots shine here: its textured surface scrapes off residue from boots and car shoes, and the rubber backing keeps it steady on concrete. The PET fibers resist staining and rinse clean with a quick spray from the hose. It’s a no-nonsense solution for hardworking entry points.
What’s the best doormat for a patio or deck?
Outdoor spaces need a mat that performs and complements your décor. WaterHog’s rugged backing won’t let water seep through to wooden decks, and its UV-stable fibers keep colors vibrant season after season. It’s mold- and mildew-resistant, so even humid climates won’t wear it down. You get reliable protection with an upscale look fit for entertaining spaces.
Do I need different mats for outside and inside?
Not if you’re using a WaterHog. Each one is built to handle the elements just as well as it handles indoor traffic. Place one outside to scrape off the heavy stuff and another just inside to catch what’s left — same mat, same performance, different jobs. It’s a seamless system that keeps dirt and moisture exactly where they belong: out of your home.
Problem & Weather FAQs
What’s the best doormat for rain?
The best mat for rain is one that can trap and contain water instead of soaking it up. WaterHog’s signature water-dam border holds over a gallon of water per square yard, while its bi-level surface wicks moisture away from shoes and into recessed channels. The PET fibers dry fast, so you’re never left stepping onto a soggy mat. Even during a downpour, your entry stays clean, dry, and safe.
What’s the best doormat for snow and slush?
Winter weather demands a mat that can handle heavy melting without turning slick. WaterHog’s raised ridges scrape off packed snow while its deep channels collect slush before it melts onto your floor. The durable rubber backing stays flexible even in subzero temperatures, so it won’t crack or curl. It’s the dependable winter workhorse your entryway needs when the forecast turns messy.
What’s the best doormat for mud?
Mud doesn’t stand a chance against a mat with real scraping power. WaterHog’s coarse, raised texture scrubs boots clean and traps mud deep below the walking surface. The bi-level design ensures dirt stays hidden until you rinse it away with a quick hose-down. Whether it’s from the yard, the trail, or the kids’ soccer game, the mud stops at your door — not on your floors.
What’s the best doormat for sand?
Sand is sneaky, but WaterHog was built for it. The textured PET fibers grab fine grains from bare feet and shoes, while the recessed pattern keeps them locked below the surface. It’s a lifesaver for beach homes, lake houses, and back doors that see plenty of barefoot traffic. When the day’s done, just shake or rinse — the sand leaves as easily as it came.
Which doormats dry the fastest after storms?
The fastest-drying mats are made from hydrophobic, non-absorbent fibers like PET. WaterHog’s surface channels moisture away and into the lower layer, leaving the top dry to the touch in minutes. Its open design allows airflow, speeding up evaporation naturally. While other mats stay soggy, a WaterHog is ready for the next round of foot traffic almost immediately.
What’s the best non-slip doormat for wet conditions?
The best non-slip mat is one that grips from the bottom and drains from the top. WaterHog’s heavy rubber backing keeps it firmly in place, while the surface channels divert water away from where you step. The beveled edges reduce trip hazards and create a smooth transition from floor to mat. It’s built to handle wet shoes, heavy rain, and whatever else walks in.
A WaterHog is also one of the very few mats that are certified "High Traction" by the National Floor Safety Institute.
What’s the best doormat for high-traffic areas?
Busy entryways need a mat that holds its shape no matter how many feet hit it. WaterHog’s commercial-grade PET surface is crush-resistant, maintaining its texture and scraping ability through years of heavy use. The reinforced rubber base stays flat and secure, never curling or shifting. It’s the same mat trusted by airports, schools, and stores — now sized perfectly for your home.
What’s the best doormat that won’t get moldy?
Mold loves moisture, so the best mats are those that don’t hold it. WaterHog’s synthetic PET fibers are quick-drying and naturally resistant to mildew growth. The rubber backing keeps water from seeping underneath, which prevents buildup or odor. Even in damp climates, it stays fresh, clean, and ready for whatever nature dishes out.
Material-Based FAQs
Is coir (coconut fiber) a good material for a doormat?
Coir mats look rustic but come with plenty of drawbacks. They shed constantly, hold onto moisture, and start to smell or rot when exposed to rain. Over time, that coarse fiber breaks down and stains your porch. WaterHog gives you the same scraping power without the shedding, mold, or mess — a clean solution that outlasts coir by years.
What’s the difference between PET and polypropylene doormats?
Both are synthetic fibers, but PET (polyethylene terephthalate) is the superior choice for moisture management and durability. It’s hydrophobic, meaning it resists soaking up water, and it stays color-stable under UV light. Polypropylene tends to fade faster and can flatten with wear. That’s why WaterHog uses premium PET — it performs better, lasts longer, and looks good doing it.
Are WaterHog mats eco-friendly?
Yes, every WaterHog carries a sustainable story. The surface fibers are made from recycled plastic bottles, and the durable rubber base includes recycled content as well. By transforming post-consumer materials into a mat that lasts for years, WaterHog reduces waste and keeps plastics out of landfills. You get sustainability that doesn’t sacrifice performance.
Do rubber-backed mats damage floors?
Not quality ones. Cheap imported mats sometimes use fillers that can leach or stick, but WaterHog’s backing is a premium, non-staining rubber compound that’s safe for most floor types. It stays put without leaving residue, and it won’t discolor hardwood or tile. Always make sure the surface underneath is clean and dry before placing any mat.
Are WaterHog mats made in the USA?
Yes, every WaterHog is proudly made in Georgia by American craftspeople. The production process combines advanced technology with decades of expertise in textile engineering. Buying a WaterHog supports domestic manufacturing, fair wages, and ethical practices. It’s performance you can feel good about, from a company that keeps jobs close to home.
What is a WaterHog mat made of?
A WaterHog is built from two key components: a crush-resistant PET fiber surface and a heavy-duty rubber backing. The fibers scrape and trap debris, while the rubber provides stability and prevents water from leaking through. This single-piece construction makes it virtually indestructible under real-world use. It’s not just a doormat — it’s engineered flooring protection.
Care & Maintenance FAQs
What’s the easiest doormat to clean?
WaterHog is one of the easiest mats you’ll ever clean. For everyday dust and pet hair, a quick vacuum does the job. When it’s covered in mud or grit, just take it outside and hose it down — the debris trapped in the channels rinses right out. There’s no soaking, no scrubbing, and no waiting days for it to dry.
Can I pressure-wash a WaterHog mat?
Yes, you can. A light to moderate pressure rinse will clear out packed-in dirt without damaging the fibers or backing. Just use common sense — no need for high-intensity blasting. Once you’ve rinsed it off, shake away the excess water and let it air-dry; it’ll be ready to use again in no time.
Can I use cleaning chemicals on a WaterHog?
For stains or stubborn residue, use mild soap and water, then rinse thoroughly. Avoid harsh solvents or bleach, as they’re unnecessary and can reduce the lifespan of any textile. The truth is, plain water does most of the work — that’s how easy this mat is to maintain.
Are WaterHog mats machine-washable?
They don’t need to be, and we don’t recommend it. WaterHog mats are heavier and more durable than typical home textiles — a quick hose-down cleans deeper and protects your washing machine. Because the surface fibers are hydrophobic, they release dirt easily and dry quickly on their own. It’s a low-maintenance product designed for real life.
Do WaterHog mats shed or fray?
Not at all. The PET fibers are permanently bonded to the rubber backing, so they won’t pull loose or shed over time. That means no stray fuzz, no fiber mess, and no thinning spots after years of use. It’s the kind of consistency you only get from an engineered, single-piece design.
Do WaterHog mats stain floors underneath?
WaterHog mats are designed to be floor-safe and non-staining on most common surfaces. The rubber backing prevents moisture from seeping through and keeps dirt from building up beneath the mat. For best results, always place it on a clean, dry surface and lift it occasionally to wipe under it. It’s a simple step that keeps both your mat and your floor in top shape.
If you have any concerns, always refer to your flooring manufacturer guidelines.
Miscellaneous FAQs
What mats do commercial buildings and hotels use at their entrances?
Commercial spaces use mats that can take years of abuse and still look sharp — and that’s why they use WaterHog. Originally engineered for high-traffic environments like airports and office buildings, WaterHog’s durability and slip resistance are unmatched. It traps water and dirt before it spreads across large floors, cutting cleaning time and maintenance costs. Those same performance standards now protect homes that expect more than just decoration at the door.
Are WaterHog mats tested for traction?
Yes, traction and safety are at the heart of WaterHog’s design. It's one of the few doormats that is certified as "High Traction" by the National Floor Safety Institute. Its rubber backing grips firmly to a wide range of surfaces, helping to protect against sliding even when wet. The beveled edge minimizes trip hazards and ensures a smooth transition from floor to mat. Every model is engineered for stability, so you can count on confident footing season after season.
How does WaterHog compare to coir and cheap imports?
It’s not even a competition. Coir mats shed fibers, rot when wet, and stain porches, while cheap imports tend to fade, curl, or lose shape within months. WaterHog outperforms them all with a durable, non-shedding PET surface and a rubber backing that never quits. It’s made to handle real life — rain, mud, pets, and people — not just look good for a season.
Why do designers recommend WaterHog for busy homes?
Designers love products that blend form and function — and WaterHog delivers both. Its refined patterns and deep color palette make it look at home in any setting, from classic to modern. Beneath that style is commercial-grade engineering that keeps floors cleaner and safer without constant upkeep. It’s the rare case where beauty and utility actually get along.
